The 83rd National Wrestling Championship 2025 concluded successfully from 21 to 23 January at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo, marking a historic milestone for Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Wrestling with a remarkable dual championship victory in both the men’s and women’s categories.
The national event was conducted under the patronage of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage and was attended by the President and Vice President of the National Wrestling Federation, Air Commodore Erandika Gunawardena, along with several distinguished invitees.
A total of 170 wrestlers representing 10 leading teams from across the country competed in the men’s and women’s divisions.
Senior SLAF officials, including Director of Sports and Chairperson of SLAF Wrestling Air Commodore Prabhath Dissanayake, Secretary SLAF Wrestling Group Captain Nalin Wewakumbura, Assistant Secretaries for the men’s and women’s teams Group Captain Sampath Jayatilake and Flying Officer Duruthu Jayatilake, were present to witness the championship and extend their support and encouragement to the SLAF teams.
In the men’s category, the Sri Lanka Air Force team emerged champions with 34.5 points, securing the national title after a 25-year gap — a significant achievement for SLAF Wrestling.
The women’s team continued their dominance, clinching the championship for the 13th consecutive year with an impressive 51 points to finish first overall.
The “Best Loser” awards were presented to Karunasena H.M.N in the women’s category and Leading Aircraftman Perera L.A.D.T in the men’s category in recognition of their outstanding performances.
