Colombo Aces unveils Golf team in major franchise expansion

Colombo Aces introduced its Golf Team for the inaugural Ceylon Golf League 2025, Sri Lanka’s first franchise-based golf tournament, at an official unveiling event held in Colombo.

Colombo Aces, known as one of the country’s early cross-sport franchises, aims to strengthen Colombo’s presence in the international sports arena while contributing to the development of Sri Lanka’s sports sector.

The Ceylon Golf League 2025 is co-founded by Shamal Perera, Suhayb Sangani, and former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene. The tournament will take place on December 5, 6, and 7 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club, featuring eight franchise teams.

Over three days, the teams will compete across three formats, marking a new structured platform for golf in Sri Lanka and offering increased visibility for the sport.

Earlier this year, Colombo Aces made history by capturing the inaugural Sri Lanka Padel League 2025 championship – a defining achievement in their debut season of franchise sport.

Expanding beyond court and course, Colombo Aces also marked its presence in motorsport with a powerful debut at Drag Wars 2025, one of Sri Lanka’s most reputed racing events.

“Each entry into a new sport reflects our commitment to excellence, innovation, and cross-disciplinary growth as a franchise. Following our success with Padel, it was a no-brainer to expand into golf. Building a new sports franchise ecosystem in Sri Lanka is our ultimate goal,” Colombo Aces  Founder and Principal Owner Viren Beruwalage said.

Responding to the impact of recent floods, Ceylon Golf League 2025 is pledging over LKR 10 million from this weekend’s proceeds to support the Government of Sri Lanka in restoring affected infrastructure nationwide. In addition to the prize money already allocated to the main fund, Colombo Aces will contribute a further LKR 250,000 to the cause.

“Sri Lanka has always shown remarkable resilience, and as a golfing community, we believe we can play our part in supporting the nation. One of our key goals with CGL 2025 is to inspire more juniors to take up golf. We truly appreciate teams like Colombo Aces for the effort they’ve put into preparing their squad and generating enthusiasm around the tournament,” CGL 2025 Co-Founder Mahela Jayawardene shared his thoughts.

The Colombo Aces Golf Team will be led by Jehan De Saram, a highly respected PGA-qualified Sri Lankan golf professional who serves as both captain and head coach. De Saram brings extensive experience to the role, having previously been the Director of Golf at the Royal Colombo Golf Club and a former national coach for the Sri Lanka golf team. Renowned for developing young talent, he has also competed in numerous local and international tournaments, adding significant depth and expertise to the Aces’ coaching setup.
