Sri Lanka takes the field as favorites as first test begins today with Afganistan

The first ever Test match between Sri Lanka and Afganistan will unfold today at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) today.

Lankans will lead by newly appointed Captain Dhanajaya De Suilva.

Sri Lanka have picked three uncapped players for the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan in Colombo, that is set to begin on February 2. This will be Dhananjaya de Silva’s first assignment as full-time Test skipper after taking over from Dimuth Karunaratne.

Wicketkeeper-batter Lahiru Udara, fast bowlers Chamika Gunasekara and Milan Rathnayake are the three uncapped players picked for the one-off clash. While Udara and Gunasekara have played in a T20I and an ODI respectively for the national side before, Rathnayake hasn’t featured in any format so far.

Afghanistan received a blow in the eleventh hour as ace spinner Rashid Khan will miss the Test match since he continues to recover from a back surgery. The 25-year-old is Afghanistan’s highest Test wicket-taker — with 34 in five matches — and has been an integral part of the team in all formats of the game.

This will be the first ever Test match featuring these two teams.

Squad: Dhananjaya de Silva (C), Kusal Mendis (VC), Dimuth Karunaratne, Nishan Madushka, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Ramesh Mendis, Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, Kasun Rajitha, Kamindu Mendis, Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Udara, Chamika Gunasekara, Milan Rathnayake
