Thomians fightback

S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia survived a major scare as Sri Sumangala College Kandy came close to pulling off a stunning upset that would have been one of the tournament’s most memorable underdog stories. The red-hot favourites were pushed to the brink before the Thomians mounted a determined second-half comeback to secure a hard-fought 31–24 victory and book their place in the quarter-finals.

At the halftime break, Sri Sumangala—fondly known in sporting circles as “Summa Rugby”—held a 17–12 lead, having scored three tries and a conversion. The Thomians responded with two tries and a conversion, as both sides headed into the sheds for a much-needed breather on a hot and extremely humid day in Colombo. The intense conditions eventually took their toll on the hill-capital boys during the second half, allowing the Thomians to claw their way back into the contest.
