Last year's champions Kandy Sports Club, who had won 23 titles in Sri Lanka's most prestigious inter-club Clifford Cup rugby tournament, were knocked out of the tournament after losing 41-38 to Havelocks. Kandy, who won the Clifford Cup for ten consecutive years from 1995 to 2005, won the title for six consecutive years from 2007 to 2012, and last year, defeated CR & FC to become the current champions.
Kandy were leading 28-12 at the end of the first half of the semi-final match held at the Nittawela Stadium in Kandy yesterday, but Havelocks players cleverly secured the victory in the final moments of the second half.
