Sri Lanka is set to host the 6th South Asian Sepaktakraw Championship on February 7 and 8 at the St. Joseph’s College Sports Complex, marking a significant milestone in the growth of the sport within the country.
Hosting rights were granted by the South Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (SASTAF), recognising the Sri Lanka Sepaktakraw Federation’s strong administrative capabilities and proven track record in organising international-level events.
The Championship will take place with the full support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, with the Minister approving essential facilities, training venues, and administrative assistance. The event also aligns with the national sports policy, which promotes youth participation, sports tourism, and healthy living.
Five nations—Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh—will compete in the two-day tournament, which will follow a round-robin format.
The event has attracted strong international backing, with International Sepaktakraw Federation President Boonchai Lorhpipat scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka on February 5 to offer guidance and engage in discussions with regional officials. The President of the Asian Sepaktakraw Federation has also conveyed strong support and is considering attending, subject to scheduling.
Publicity efforts will include nationwide media coverage and digital promotion through the Sri Lanka Sepaktakraw Federation’s official platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and a soon-to-be-launched website. A large turnout of Sepaktakraw fans and sports enthusiasts from across the island is anticipated.
Organisers highlighted that the Championship also offers valuable opportunities for corporate sponsorship, brand exposure, and CSR partnerships, as Sepaktakraw continues its rapid growth at both regional and international levels.
