Sri Lanka Cricket’s decision to exclude Kamindu Mendis while persisting with an out-of-form Dhananjaya de Silva in the T20 squad against England is yet another example of inconsistent selection policy undermining meritocracy.
Kamindu Mendis has been one of the more promising middle-order options in recent times. His adaptability, calm temperament, and unique ambidextrous bowling make him an ideal modern T20 asset. More importantly, he has shown hunger — something Sri Lanka desperately needs in a rebuilding phase. Leaving him out sends a troubling message: performance and potential can be sidelined in favor of familiarity.
On the other hand, Dhananjaya de Silva’s inclusion is difficult to justify based on recent form. While his past contributions to Sri Lankan cricket deserve respect, T20 cricket is brutally unforgiving to players who are struggling for rhythm. Dhananjaya has looked short of confidence with the bat, and his part-time off-spin no longer offers the control or wicket-taking threat it once did. Selection cannot be based on reputation alone, especially in the shortest format where impact matters more than experience.
England represent one of the most aggressive T20 sides in the world. Beating them requires fearless batting, athletic fielding, and players who are currently in touch — not those searching for form. Kamindu fits that profile far better than Dhananjaya at this moment.
What’s most frustrating is the lack of consistency in Sri Lanka’s selection philosophy. If the goal is to build for the future, players like Kamindu must be backed through opportunities. If the goal is to win now, then current form should be the primary criterion. This selection achieves neither.
Sri Lanka cricket cannot afford to keep recycling underperforming combinations while sidelining emerging talent. Until selectors start rewarding form over familiarity, the team risks stagnation — and promising players like Kamindu Mendis may continue to watch from the sidelines while opportunities slip away.
