Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) President Jaswar Umar has revealed that efforts are underway to bring back National Team Head Coach Abdullah Almutairi on a new contract, following the coach’s announcement on Facebook last Friday (23) that his tenure in Sri Lanka had officially ended.
Umar explained that Almutairi, a Kuwaiti national who took charge of the Sri Lankan team two years ago after the departure of Andy Morrison, had only completed the first phase of his agreement. He expressed confidence that the coach could be convinced to return after formal discussions.
“Only the first phase of his contract has ended,” Umar said. “We plan to renegotiate a fresh contract with him, and I am quite confident we will be able to secure his return once negotiations are completed.”
The FFSL President also confirmed that Almutairi is expected to lead Sri Lanka in their final Group D match against Chinese Taipei on 31 March in Taipei, as part of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers.
