Media Cricket Club vs. Mercantile Cricket Association Annual Encounter Concludes on a High Note

The much-anticipated annual cricket encounter between the Media Cricket Club (MCC) and the Mercantile Cricket Association (MCA) concluded this weekend in an atmosphere of enthusiasm, camaraderie, and sporting excellence. The match, held at the MCA Grounds, brought together players, supporters, and cricket enthusiasts from both institutions for a day marked by spirited competition and fellowship.

Now an established and eagerly awaited fixture on the local cricket calendar, the Media–Mercantile annual encounter continues to serve as a platform to foster healthy rivalry while strengthening the longstanding relationship between the media fraternity and the corporate cricketing community. Both teams fielded strong line-ups, featuring a blend of seasoned players and emerging talent — reflecting the growing popularity of cricket beyond the professional circuit.

The match commenced under clear skies, with the Media Cricket Club winning the toss and electing to bat first. MCC’s Aathif Siddique provided a solid start, setting the foundation for a competitive total. Despite disciplined bowling from the Mercantile attack, Dinesh Upendra stabilized the innings with a valuable contribution of 39 runs, earning him the Best Batsman award. The Media Cricket Club posted a respectable total of 107 runs in 20 overs.

In reply, the Mercantile Cricket Association’s batsmen launched a determined chase. MCA captain Mahesh De Alwis anchored the innings with a composed performance, while late-order fireworks ensured steady progress toward the target. Ultimately, the Mercantile Cricket Association secured victory by five wickets, reaching the target with an over to spare. Priyal Weerasinghe was the standout performer with the ball for MCC, claiming three wickets in an impressive spell.
