Sri Lanka is set to make a determined mark on the global stage as a national contingent prepares to compete at the World Para Athletics Championships, scheduled to be held in New Delhi, India later this year. The event, recognized as one of the premier competitions for differently-abled athletes, will bring together world-class talent from across continents.
The Sri Lankan team, comprising both seasoned campaigners and promising newcomers, represents a diverse mix of track and field disciplines. Officials from the National Paralympic Committee of Sri Lanka confirmed that athletes who excelled at recent regional meets and national trials have earned their place on the squad. Among the key events targeted by the team are javelin, discus, sprint events, and middle-distance races—areas where Sri Lanka has shown strong international pedigree in recent years.
Team selectors and coaches have emphasized that preparations have been intense, with athletes undergoing high-performance training camps focusing on technique, strength, and mental conditioning. The athletes have also benefitted from guidance provided by experienced international coaches and sports science experts.
Sri Lanka has a proud history in para athletics, highlighted by Paralympic gold medals in past Games and multiple Asian Championship titles. The upcoming World Championships present another opportunity to showcase the island’s depth of talent and to secure crucial ranking points ahead of future Paralympic cycles.
Officials expressed confidence that the team will not only deliver competitive performances but also inspire the nation. “Our athletes have worked tirelessly to reach this stage. Representing Sri Lanka on the world stage is an honor, and we are confident they will give their best,” said a spokesperson for the National Paralympic Committee.
The World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi are expected to draw hundreds of athletes from across the globe, setting the stage for intense competition and powerful stories of determination. For Sri Lanka, the event is more than a medal hunt—it is a chance to celebrate resilience, inclusivity, and the unifying spirit of sport.
