umesh Tharanga Qualifies for Javelin Throw Finals at World Athletics Championship

Sri Lanka’s number one men’s javelin thrower, Rumesh Tharanga, qualified yesterday (17) for the men’s javelin throw finals of the 20th IAAF World Athletics Championship Tokyo 2025, currently taking place in Tokyo from September 13 to 21.

Representing Group ‘B’ in the men’s javelin qualification round, Tharanga recorded an impressive throw of 82.80 meters, securing the 12th position overall and earning a place in the finals.

The men’s javelin throw finals, featuring the top 12 athletes, are scheduled to be held today.

A total of 37 competitors participated across qualification groups A and B. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Rio Olympian (2016) Sumeda Ranasingha, who competed in Group ‘A’, recorded a throw of 81.86 meters and secured 15th place overall but narrowly missed qualification for the finals.

In the women’s 400 meters event, Nadeesha Ramanayake, who also represented Sri Lanka earlier finished her heat in 53.63 seconds, which was not enough to advance to the next round.
