Wasim Akram comes to Babar Azam’s defence after ex-captain left out of Asia Cup squad: ‘Pakistan needs him…’

Pace legend Wasim Akram feels former Pakistan captain Babar Azam deserves to remain part of the T20I setup even if the selection committee thinks otherwise, having left him out of the Asia Cup squad recently along with fellow ex-skipper Mohammad Rizwan.

Akram observed that the current Pakistan squad is missing an anchor for the No 3 and No 4 positions, and are likely to deploy hard-hitting batters for those positions. The former Pakistan captain felt could cost the Salman Agha-led side dearly, especially in knockout games.

“We lost against Bangladesh but defeated West Indies 2-1. Next up, we have the Asia Cup, followed by the World Cup next year. The problem that we currently face is the fact that we only have hitters for the No 3 and 4 slots. In a chase of 140 or 145, for instance, in a knockout game against Australia, India or England, you need an anchor at that slot with a good strike and technique,” Akram said on the Hasna Mana Hai show on
