Before we go down to Pallekelle, the Bradby Express will sound its horn around 7.30 am tomorrow with a massive cheering squad, which includes a compartment reserved for the Trinitians as well, which exhibits great comradie amongst past players and fans.
Tickets priced at a premium are sold out. Disappointed fans in the thousands feel both Pallekele and Jurassic Park are too small to host the Bradby, but that’s the story and the glory of the Bradby Shield, which has always created amazing hype amongst the rugby fraternity.
As a former Thomian,CR & F C captain and National player I was asked, “whom do you support ? Wish I could kick that question to touch with the win predictor, but my producer stated that an opinion in the win predictor unanswered is acceptable, but not whom I will cheer ? Sorry Royal , I have no choice but to cheer my brother school Trinity.
Both Trinity and Royal have had an excellent season. Going by the past results in my book is a waste of time because Bradby is different when both teams run into that field. Both schools will bargain for this prestigious Shield that to the league championship, period.
So, the Bradby is unique with a rich history. Every Royalist and Trinitian dreams of wearing that Jearsy .
Trinity to win must retain possession, aimless kicking, infringements, and vital unforced errors at crucial times are their own enemies. Kick aimlessly at the Royal back three, and Trinity will pay dearly. Trinity has the winning combination, excellent in defence, speedy three-quarters, in motion , but they tend to panic under pressure or when there is a counterattack.
This cost them against St Peters, Royal coach Lewke would tell his boys where to hit the Lions, the area it hurts most.
Counter attack , ensure to upset the Shan Altaf, udani Wijekoon fly half, scrum combination, starve the wingers of possession, and watch their forwards pick and drive and rolling maul because Trinity strives in breakdowns and opposition follies as well.
In theory, it’s easy reading. In action, it is herculean.
Royal has a golden back three , a strong set of forwards, but the challenge is the Trinity defence. However royal will concentrate on ball retention, turnovers, and precise kicking and will ensure their defence in the vulnerable zones are solid like a stone wall. They will be alert in the fringes too.
If they let the Lions loose, they will prey for sure and take the game away. Idris Farook must have his boots in the park , envisaging the predictable infringements. The back three must counter attack, continued pressure, is the key factor for a Royal glory.
We wish both teams all the best . The whistle is in the hands of a foreign NZ referee David Jacobus Brouwer who will officiate both legs, hence, that will ease the pressure for both teams.
We envisage a true tradition of the Bradby , wish the old boys of both schools, friends, rugby lovers and the thousands watching the live action on Electronic media a memorable game.
We will give you further details on Saturday evening but until we get a call from our match commentators in Pallekele, here is a piece of music for your listening pleasure selected by Brian Thomas, as he revisits his younger days at Radio Ceylon.
