The Premier Hockey League (PHL) Sri Lanka is gearing up for a season two, promising to be a notable event in the country’s sporting calendar.
At a media briefing held on Monday (18) at the Colombo Swimming Club, the official announcement was made, setting the stage for an exciting month of competition that will kick off from the first week of November and last till the end of the month.
Police, Army, Navy, Air Force, BRC, CH, CR, Old Senanayakians Sports Club (DS) and the Royal College Hockey Club are among the nine formidable sides that will vie for honours in this year’s edition according to the tournament organisers.
The forthcoming event is organised by the NextGen Hockey Development Society with backing from the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Following a successful first season in which prominent international players, including those from the national teams of India and Pakistan participated.
Season two is set to witness an even larger infusion of international talent while it is anticipated that their varied skill-set and global experience would enhance the level of competitiveness and offer fans of the sport exciting and thrilling moments.
To spread the excitement of the game to a wider audience and inspire passionate spectator engagement in both cities, the upcoming competition is scheduled to be staged in two vibrant hockey hubs Colombo and Matale.
By introducing a development squad to find and nurture budding talent, PHL Season two seeks to advance local hockey beyond the impending competition.
The goal of this initiative is to strengthen and solidify the game’s future in this country and get young athletes prepared for global events.
The organisers also commended the sponsors, media partners, previous players, and the wider hockey community for the tremendous support they had received during the inaugural edition.
NextGen Hockey Development Society Sri Lanka President Kamal Pushpakumara said: “The PHL is a platform that not only showcases elite hockey but also sets the standard for the upcoming generation of players. And we are thrilled to launch season two. This season looks to be nothing short of spectacular thanks to an extended team line up, world-class overseas players along with the unshakable support of our partners.”
