SLR AGM for 2025: Acceptance of nominations to end on 19 Aug.

The acceptance of nominations to contest the posts for Sri Lanka rugby (SLR), at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for 9 September, 2025 is due to close on 19 August, its Executive Director (ED) Chula Ariyaratne said in a media release on Wednesday (6).

The closing date for objections submitted concerning the nominations received will be 26 August, according to the SLR Executive Director.

The Working Task Force, which is currently overseeing the day-to-day functions of SLR, has already formed a five-member committee to supervise the election of office bearers to the sport’s local ruling body, via a Special General Meeting (SGM) held on 28 July.

It is to be headed by Retired Justice of the Court of Appeal Lalith Jayasuriya, with the others being Retired Judge of the Colombo High Court Nimal Ranaweera, Retired Commissioner General of Elections and former member of the Election Committee M.M. Mohamed, an official nominated by the Sports Ministry Dilum Dayaratne, and an official nominated by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and its incumbent General Secretary Rifdy Fahmy, respectively.

The local rugby grapevine has it that already a high-ranking Government official and three prominent rugby personalities – including two former national players – are contemplating throwing their respective hats into the ring, with no clear front-runner having emerged thus far to contest the Presidency of SLR.w
