Sri Lanka Climbs FIFA Rankings: A Promising Step for Lankan Football

By Hishan Welmilla

Colombo, July 11, 2025 — In a proud moment for Sri Lankan football, the national men’s team has made a notable leap in the latest FIFA World Rankings, moving up four places from 200th to 196th. While the climb may seem modest, it signals a positive direction for a country long striving to establish a stronger presence in international football.

The advancement reflects recent improvements in both team performance and strategic development under the leadership of head coach Sampath Perera. A series of solid showings in regional friendlies and qualification matches for upcoming tournaments have not gone unnoticed, earning Sri Lanka valuable points in FIFA’s ranking system.

A Sign of Growth
Football in Sri Lanka has often played second fiddle to cricket, the country’s most celebrated sport. However, recent efforts by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) to invest in youth development programs, improve training facilities, and schedule more international fixtures are beginning to show results.

“This ranking boost is a morale-builder for our team and supporters,” said FFSL President Jaswar Umar. “It validates the hard work that players, coaches, and administrators have put in, and it gives us momentum heading into our future competitions.”

Regional and Global Ambitions
With South Asian football continuing to gain traction, Sri Lanka’s rise in the rankings puts them in a better position within the region. Climbing the ranks not only boosts morale but can also lead to better seeding in international competitions and qualifiers, giving the team a greater chance of progressing to higher stages.

The next goal? Breaking into the top 150 — a challenge that FFSL believes is achievable with continued support, development, and consistency on the pitch.

Fan Support Growing
The rise in the rankings comes alongside growing local interest in football, particularly among the youth. Social media buzz and packed stadiums at home matches show that fans are rallying behind the national team more than ever.

“This is just the beginning,” said national team captain Mohamed Fazal. “We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re proud to wear the lion on our chest and push forward step by step.”

As Sri Lanka eyes more competitive fixtures and looks to continue its climb, this latest milestone offers a glimpse into a more hopeful future for the beautiful game on the island.
