I wish I could kick to touch when coming to a conclusion for the team of the week in the all exciting stage of Schools Rugby League week 5.
Zahira came up with a sterling performance to run down 10 tries against Mahanama, which was eye-catching and certainly displaying their skill levels at this game. However also they leaked 17 points to Mahanama and dumped them to the bowl.
Wesley is a consistent team scoring in both halves to beat the least fancied Ananda team by 43 points to 11 and their brilliant match awareness, game plan is also a learning curve to all teams that no team is to be taken lightly as push overs, hence we place league contenders Wesley at spot 3 this week ahead of Zahira.
Trinity College kandy came up with a sterling performance, thumping Royal by 34 points to 12 and the feature being Royal kept out of bounce from the Lions white wash line.At the same time royal defence was not at its best as Trinity capitalised on many royal mistakes like a few crucial dropped passes to score including their two cross kicks that ended up in tries.
Trinity must improve with their excessive infringements, which gave the opposition 10 penalties .They also must remind play maker Shan Altaf not to forget his kicking boots because going forward, it is a prerequisite.
We placed Trinity at number 2, taking into consideration that they falter more than often in attack mode and lose vital scoring opportunities.
The team of the week ladies and gentlemen is St Thomas’. What a power packed brutal force displayed and dominant proceedings to beat Isipathana after 16 years, completely outplaying their brand of Rugby, which Isipathana are famously known for amongst the rugby fraternity.
The forwards and the backs were a treat to watch on the day. The Thomians made use of their weight advantage and most importantly, spread the ball to their three quarter line by ensuring that Isipathana got drawn into a catch-up mode, which is a strange format to them over decades.
Isipathana was blinded, and the Thomian grit had its toll on the Kings from Havelock Park.
It was a tight choice between Trinity and her brother school St Thomas’ but the latter gets our nod because they had lesser infringements and beat a champion team after 16 years. Miserly the unforced errors are the ingredients for excellence.
