Brian Thomas and Christopher Jordashe reporting
St. Peter’s 38 – Ananda College 22
The defending champions, St. Peter’s College, were given an unexpected scare by underdogs Ananda College, who proved they belong in the top tier. Though the scoreboard read 38–22 in favour of the Bamba brigade, the game was far from a walk in the park.
Christopher Jordashe had earlier warned that Ananda, who beat St. Benedict’s in the B Division President’s Knock-Out final, would pose a serious threat. That prophecy came true yesterday as the Maradana lads showed grit and structure that challenged the reigning champions for the full 70 minutes.
Ananda’s forwards were quick to the breakdowns and their three-quarters ran hard and straight, frequently disrupting Peterite momentum. While St. Peter’s looked rusty—possibly due to a long layoff and recent controversies—their defensive unit stood firm in the second half, preventing Ananda from narrowing the gap.
St. Thomas’ 29 – Kingswood 28
At Mount Lavinia, the Thomians were nearly the architects of their own downfall. Despite leading 29–14 with just five minutes to go, they allowed Kingswood to storm back with two late tries, almost costing them the game.
The early tone was set when Wickramasuriya mishandled a high ball off the kickoff, gifting Kingswood a scrum and an early converted try. Thomian forwards then took control, capitalizing on aimless kicking and repeated infringements by the visitors to score twice and take control.
At halftime, the scores were level at 14-all, but the second half saw St. Thomas’s grit shine through. Bulathsinghala’s boot added crucial points, and the Thomians looked to have sealed the match. But Kingswood’s late adrenaline surge made for a thrilling finish. Still, the home side deserved the win, having dominated large stretches of the game.
Vidyartha 24 – St. Joseph’s 24
A gritty and intense battle at Nittawela saw the Josephians edge ahead 7–5 at the break. The second half was a true pendulum swinger, with both teams exchanging tries and momentum. In the end, a 24-all draw was a fair reflection of the balance. This result could play a crucial role in the Group 3 points table going forward.
Wesley 63 – Science College 15
A dominant and clinical display by Wesley College saw them cement their credentials as Super Six contenders. Leading 35–10 at halftime, they didn’t let up, finishing with a resounding 63–15 victory. Wesley looked well-drilled, structured, and consistent—an ominous sign for their group rivals.
Isipathana 34 – Mahanama 19
The Green Machine was expected to cruise, but Mahanama College had other plans. Leading 14–12 at halftime, Isipathana briefly trailed 19–14 early in the second half. Mahanama’s spirited performance included strong defense and some eye-catching individual efforts in attack.
However, their line-out woes—losing 80% of their throws—and two costly yellow cards tilted the balance. Isipathana used their experience to pull clear, but they were far from their best. A timely wake-up call for the Park school.
Team of the Week:
Wesley College – For their ruthless consistency and clinical performance.
Runners-up: Royal and Trinity, who also showed strong form over the weekend.
