Pioneer cricketing lady Gwen Herath no more

A legendary figure in the country’s women’s cricketing firmament Gwen Herath (nee Ayesha Weerakoon) passed away.

She was the founder of the Women’s Cricket Association of Sri Lanka (WCASL) before it merged with Sri Lanka Cricket in 2006.

The late Gwen Herath was also a former Provincial Councillor with the North Western Province and the beloved spouse of late Harold Herath, himself a former Foreign Affairs Minister.

Before marriage she was also a former actress of the Sinhala cinema and famously played the lead female role going under her maiden name Ayesha Weerakoon, in the classic 1953 movie ‘Prema Tharangaya’ opposite Aruna Shanthi.

Her remains currently lie at A.F. Raymond’s Funeral Parlour, Borella from 8 p.m. yesterday (27). The funeral service will be held today (28) at 2.30 p.m., followed by burial at Borella cemetery at 3 p.m.
