USA Cricket is pleased to announce the appointment of Pubudu Dassanayake as the new Head Coach of the USA Men’s National Cricket Team. This marks a homecoming for Dassanayake, who previously led the team from 2016 to 2019—a transformative period during which the squad earned its coveted One Day International (ODI) status.
A former international cricketer, Dassanayake represented Sri Lanka in 11 Test matches and 16 ODIs in the early 1990s before relocating to Canada, where he also captained the national team. Over the past decade, he has held successful coaching stints with Canada, Nepal, and USA, guiding Canada to the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and helping Nepal qualify for their first-ever ICC World Twenty20 in 2014.
During his first tenure with USA Cricket, Dassanayake played a pivotal role in the team’s ascent from World Cricket League Division Four to achieving ODI status in 2019. His emphasis on team culture and long-term development helped lay a foundation that continues to support the team’s progress today.
Most recently, Dassanayake served as Head Coach of the Canadian men’s team, where he led them to regain ODI status and qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024—Canada’s first appearance in the tournament.
Pubudu Dassanayake said:
“It’s an honor to return and lead the USA Men’s National Team. I’m proud of what we accomplished during my previous time here, and I see tremendous potential in this group to reach even greater heights. I look forward to working closely with the players and staff to continue building something meaningful for USA Cricket.”
Srini Salver, Chair of the USA Men’s Cricket Committee, added:
“We’re thrilled to welcome Pubudu back. His previous contributions were transformative, and his depth of international experience will be vital as we continue developing our men’s national program.”
Dassanayake will officially begin his duties following the completion of his visa process.
USA Cricket CEO Johnathan Atkeison commented:
“Pubudu is joining the organization at a pivotal time. Following the momentum of 2024, we are now focused on strong performances at the 2026 T20 World Cup and qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup. With his experience and vision, we believe Pubudu can help us achieve these goals.”
His appointment comes as USA Cricket prepares for the upcoming Cricket World Cup League 2 fixtures in Florida and continues to build its global presence.
Vincent Kumar, who served as Interim Head Coach during the CWC event in Oman and the recent North American Cup, will resume his role as Assistant Coach and continue leading the USA Men’s U19 program.
Atkeison added:
“We’re grateful to Vincent for his leadership during this transition. He remains an integral part of our coaching team and will continue to shape the next generation of USA Cricket.”
