Sri Lanka have lost the services of Muttiah Muralitharan for the remaining four matches of their five-ODI series against India.
The star spinner has failed to overcome a finger injury sustained in the preceding Test series.
"We have decided to rest Murali from the one-day series to allow him to recover fully from the finger injury and to be available for future tournaments," Sri Lanka manager Brendon Kuruppu told PTI on Wednesday.
"Murali injured his ring and middle fingers during the Mumbai Test and is going back home via Chennai."
Rookie spinners Muthumudalige Pushpakumara and Suraj Randiv have been called up to the limited-overs squad on the back of Muralitharan's withdrawal.
Fast bowler Lasith Malinga will be available for the second ODI on Friday after injury kept him out of the series opener.
India currently lead the series one-nil after a thrilling three-run win in Tuesday's humdinger.
