Isipathana College emerge overall champs at Inter-School Golf Tournament

Isipathana College, which is a school renowned for its supremacy in rugby, having produced the greatest number of past captains and players to the Sri Lankan national team, demonstrated that its sporting ability goes well beyond the ambit of the oval shape ball when they emerged overall winners of the Inter-School Golf Tournament 2017.

Isipathana beat out schools from across the island with more than 220 golfers from over 54 participating teams taking part in the competition conducted by the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC).

The school also recorded the ‘Highest Net Score Player of the Tournament’. This tournament saw the greatest participation so far in the current calendar year of RCGC.

Isipathana College Captain Anura Somarathne said: “We are indeed elated to become overall champions of the highest participated tournament. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Ravi Liyanage, our fellow teammate who contributed immensely in our endeavour to reach the top position in this highly competitive tournament, to become a champion team with his great achievement of becoming the ‘Player of the tournament with the highest net score’.”

The other members of the victorious team include Mervin Preena and Prassanna Gunathilaka.

“Our team consists of relatively new players but those who have played other sports at the highest level with the right winning attitude to approach a competition of this nature. Further, I am very pleased with our achievement, with eight players and two teams whereas other competing schools had a large golfing community with two schools having entered with 24 players per school. I take this opportunity to extend our appreciation to platinum sponsors DFCC Bank and Aquafina and all the other sponsors and Dons, who organised and showcased such an impressive tournament, and RCGC and their staff for their attentive execution of a tournament of this magnitude,” Somarathne added.

The exciting atmosphere on the day, from the way in which the trophy was airlifted to the performance of the papare band, made the event spectacular and inspirational for participants and they gave their best to their teams and their schools.

The 4th Inter-School Golf Tournament has received an unprecedented response and the highest number of entries in terms of schools, teams and individuals testifies to this. Fifty-four teams and the individual participation of over 210 players is a record which made the tournament very successful and positioned it well for the future.

The 4th Inter-School Golf Tournament, which concluded on 16 December 2017, was conducted on a Stableford format where the highest aggregate of the participating team was based on gross points. The main award categories were for the overall winners, first runner-up, second runner-up and third runner-up at the team level and gross score and net score at the individual level. Each school was permitted to field a maximum of six teams totalling up to 24 players.

Some of the other award-winners were: first runner-up S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and second runner-up St. Joseph’s College Colombo.
