Rajeew Perera appointed Junior Rugby coach

Former Havies and Sri Lanka hooker Rajeew Perera has been appointed Sri Lanka head coach for the Junior Sri Lanka Under-19 XV-a-side rugby team ahead of the Junior Asian Rugby Championship to be held next month. Former Sri Lanka sevens player and Isipathana Coach Lasintha De Costa will assist Perera.

Former Peterite Rajeew Perera had success with the men’s team as an assistant during the last few years and Lasintha did well with Isipathana last year. Both coaches will be overlooked by Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) High Performance Director Inthi Marikar.

Both are L2 accredited coaches and had started training with the team before they were official appointed yesterday. Defending champions Hong Kong and Sri Lanka will fight it out to secure a berth in the World Rugby Junior Trophy (second-tier world championship) to be held next year.

The first leg of the match will be played in Sri Lanka on 10 December and the second leg in Hong Kong on 17 December.

Sri Lanka sevens player and S. Thomas’ captain Naveen Henakankanamage had been appointed captain of the side on Monday.

The Selection Committee shortlisted a 37 member pool from 60 players and plan to prune it down to 30 next week ahead of the competition.
